Today in class we went over the HW, which was to define vocabulary, that we had done in class that Friday. He wanted us to add information to our previous vocab definitions- so here it is...

HW Assignment

Agora- The agora was a central spot in Ancient Greek city-states. The agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city.

Arete- Means "excellence of any kind," or the act of living up to one's full potential; moral virtue.

Polis- city in Greece. It can also mean, a body of citizens; central urban area.

508 BC- In 508BC "democracy" began in Athens. Male citizens were given the chance to vote in order to decide how the city-state should run.

Socrates- Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher, born in 470 BC. He is known for being one of the founders of Western Philosophers. He is also known for his many writings; as well as an oil painter. 

The Death of Socrates- Socrates was on trial for the corruption of young Athenians. Socrates went to court to defend himself, and said things like this to the judges...

  • "Athens is a horse and I am the horse fly. I always keeping Athen moving."
  • "You should thank me for what I'm doing here."
  • "I  am not going to stop speaking to people... I am not going to stop sharing my opinions..."
With this, Socrates was found guilty and sentenced to death. Socrates was given a cup of Hemlock-poison- which causes all parts of the body to stop working over a short period of time. The pain was excruciating. 





Socratic Method- was a form of discussion in which people asked questions and gave answers to stimulate critical thinking. 

  • What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot...
An idiot in Athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self-centeredness.
