Today in Mr. Schick's class, we reviewed everything that he had taught on Friday- since half of the class was away on a retreat. We talked about Population and Settlement. Here are some notes that we took in class.

  • There are over 7 billion people on the planet right now.
  • It's increasing 73 million per year.
  • 90% of the population growth takes place in developing countries.

Life Expectancy

- The average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year.

Measuring Population

- crude birth rate > number of births per 1,000 of the population.
- crude death rate > number of deaths per 1,000 of the population.

Rate of Natural Increase

  • This is produced by subtracting one death rate from one birth rate.
  • This gives us the annual natural growth rate- in percentage form- for a country or region.

~ population is also produced by migration. ~

HW

1.) Blog Edit
On Mr. Schick's PowerPoint he said 3.62 was the number of migrants per 1,000 population in the US. Now the number is 2.45.

I found the CIA Fact Book very interesting.

See you Wednesday!
